We are inviting local people in East Lothian to find out more about the start of enabling works ahead of the construction of the new Branxton substation.
Enabling work will include the construction of a slip road off the northbound A1, duct installation for traffic light power, barrier protection for the railway bridge, and resurfacing the Bilsdean/Dunglass A1 junction connecting Dunglass Road and Birnieknowes Road.

A new 2-metre wide shared-use path for cyclists, pedestrations, and horse riders will also be installed south of these road sections. No road closures are anticipated, and access will be maintained throughout the works.
An area designated for materials storage will later become a welfare compound and the starting point of the haul road to the substation site.
We are working with East Lothian Council to confirm start dates. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to attend the drop-in event to view project maps, ask questions, and share any concerns ahead of work beginning.
The event will be held from:
3-7pm Tuesday 4 November
Innerwick Outdoor Centre / Old Schol House, Innerwick EH42 1SE
The new high-voltage substation at Branxton will create much-needed capacity on the network and improve the resilience of the local electricity network. With electricity demand expected to double by 2050, the works are part of a wider programme of investment by SP Energy Networks to ensure its transmission network can continue to serve customers across the country well into the future.
