As our Data Science Graduate Apprentice, Zakari has been studying towards his data science degree while working on real-world projects at SP Energy Networks.
We spoke to him to bring you an exclusive insight into the world of a graduate apprentice. Check out his answers below to find out more about his career journey and the benefits of this apprenticeship programme.
- What has your experience at SPEN been like so far?
I have been involved in several lines of work so far and I am enjoying learning about the work of my team but also the other teams in SPEN. There is a lot still to learn.
- What do you enjoy the most about your role?
There is a great variety of work and I feel like the work I do contributes to the goals of the company. The work is also very closely linked to what I'm studying at University so they both tie in well.
- Can you tell us a bit about your career journey - What led you this career choice? Why did you apply for this role?
I initially wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I went to University for a short time after I left school but decided I preferred working instead. After working in the public sector for five years I had a clearer idea of what I wanted to do. I knew I wanted to work and study at University, but I was also keen to join the energy sector. As soon as I found out about the Graduate Apprenticeship programme at Scottish Power I knew it was the perfect opportunity.
- How do you think you’ll benefit from completing this programme?
At the end of the four year programme I will not only have a degree, but also four years of work experience which is invaluable compared to studying solely at University. The additional work experience is a major benefit.
- What do you like the most about working at SPEN?
I enjoy learning about the great variety of departments and learning how they all fit together to serve a common purpose - keeping the lights on sustainably.
- What are the people like that you work with?
Everyone I have met so far is knowledgeable, experienced and always willing to help. I have had no problems finding my feet thanks to the support of my colleagues.
