This Armed Forces Day, SP Energy Networks is proud to recognise colleagues who have transitioned from military service into civilian careers — bringing valuable skills that help power communities and support the UK’s energy transition.
As part of ScottishPower — recently named among the top 50 GREAT British Employers of Veterans 2026 — we are committed to supporting veterans, reservists and their families through meaningful career opportunities.
Creating careers beyond service
Central to this commitment is our EMPower programme, a 12-month training and recruitment pathway designed to help ex-service personnel move into skilled roles across the electricity network and wider energy sector.
For Barry McIntosh, an EMPower trainee and former member of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, the programme has provided a new direction:
“It was daunting to leave the army after so long… EMPower is giving me a second career full of opportunity. The training and support help you make the most of the skills you’ve developed in the military — I’m really enjoying it.”

Applying experience beyond service
Across SP Energy Networks, veterans and reservists apply the strengths developed during service — from resilience and leadership to teamwork and problem solving — to help deliver vital infrastructure for homes and businesses.
Russell Maclean, a Lands Officer and Army reservist, draws on operational experience in Iraq and Afghanistan to stay calm under pressure, support colleagues and maintain a strong focus on delivery.
Similarly, Leslie Barker, who joined through EMPower after serving as an Anti-Tank Platoon Sergeant, has transitioned into project and operational roles — using his leadership, adaptability and proactive mindset to build a long-term career.
Leadership and delivering for communities
Mark Flannigan, now a Senior Project Manager in SP Transmission, applies the communication, teamwork and leadership skills developed as an Infantry Officer to deliver critical infrastructure projects.
His work supports the modernisation of the electricity network and contributes to the transition to Net Zero, providing a strong sense of purpose beyond service.

We recognise that moving into civilian employment can present challenges. That’s why we provide structured pathways like EMPower, alongside mentoring, peer support and strong internal networks to help colleagues adapt, grow and succeed.
