SP Energy Networks has been announced as headline sponsor of the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards, reinforcing our long-standing commitment to developing skilled, diverse and local talent across the communities we serve.
The sponsorship comes as we deliver our biggest ever recruitment drive, creating new opportunities for people to learn while they earn and build long-term careers in the energy sector. Apprenticeships play a vital role in Scotland’s economy, opening doors for individuals of all backgrounds and helping to build the skilled workforce needed for the future.
Over the next decade, we will invest billions of pounds in our transmission and distribution networks to help electrify Britain — upgrading and expanding infrastructure to support an all electric future.
This unprecedented investment means demand for skilled people has never been greater, with roles spanning frontline operational work through to digital, engineering and project delivery careers.
Jennifer Davies, Workforce Renewal Manager at SP Energy Networks, said: “Apprenticeships kickstart people’s working lives and it’s a real privilege to be a business setting career foundations for so many young people. With ambitious investment plans ahead, we need people to help us deliver — and our biggest ever recruitment drive is underway.
Sponsoring the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards reflects our longstanding commitment to developing skilled, diverse and local talent, and to supporting Scotland’s wider skills system. We look forward to celebrating the individuals, employers and partners who make apprenticeships work and deliver real, positive impacts right across society.”
Growing opportunities across our network
Our apprenticeship programme has expanded significantly over the past decade. Today, more than 260 apprentices are learning while they earn with SP Energy Networks, with a further 120 new apprentices set to be recruited in 2026.
Opportunities range from overhead line work, jointing and fitting, through to data science, project management and software engineering. Many of our current managers, technical specialists and senior leaders began their careers as apprentices — highlighting the long-term progression and stability the programme offers.
Jennifer added: “The beauty of our apprenticeship programme is that we’re recruiting in the very communities we serve. From Cupar to Canonbie, with depots across the country, we’re Internal Use creating jobs in towns and villages where we are often one of the biggest employers. That means people can stay close to home while building a career that can span decades.”
Celebrating apprentice success Among this year’s Scottish Apprenticeship Awards finalists is Alice Fairbairn, shortlisted for Modern Apprentice of the Year Level 6+. Alice has thrived as a Modern Apprentice with SP Energy Networks after choosing the company for its long-term career prospects, technical challenge and community impact. As an apprentice fitter, she plays a key role in plant maintenance, fault repairs and network upgrades — helping to keep the electricity network safe and reliable.
She has also demonstrated exceptional commitment and resilience, volunteering during major storm response efforts to help keep the lights on for customers. Now a mentor and apprenticeship ambassador, Alice supports new starters and promotes careers in the energy sector.
Her success reflects SP Energy Networks’ continued leadership in nurturing the next generation of energy professionals and building the workforce needed to power a cleaner, more resilient future.
We’re always looking for talented, motivated people to join our growing apprenticeship programme and help shape the future of energy.
