SP Energy Networks is working with SSE and National Grid to develop some of the longest underwater HVDC cables in the world, with a combined capacity of 4 GW, and will play a vital role in achieving zero net greenhouse gas emissions.
The cables will significantly increase the United Kingdom's capacity to deliver clean, green and renewable energy and will supply four million homes within a 440 km radius, from the east of Scotland, a hub for offshore renewables, to two locations in the north east of England; Drax and Hawthorn Pit.
Almost 1 GW of wind farms are already in operation off the east coast of Scotland, and a further 4.4 GW is in the pipeline. Furthermore, some 10 additional GW are predicted following the outcome of the next round of tenders for offshore wind energy in Scotland, Scotwind.
