DalmallyP-Route

A multi-project series of works was recently completed close to the Soutra Aisle in the Scottish Borders. Known as P route, the project involved significant refurbishment of the overhead line, which runs from Dalkeith to Galashiels, as well as connecting two windfarms to the grid at Dunlaw and Toddleburn.

When it became apparent that the existing P Route overhead line was  unable to accommodate two new windfarms at Dunlaw and Toddleburn, we carried out a major refurbishment and reinforcement of 41km of the existing tower line . Rather than constructing a new line we have refurbished a line at the end of its useful life to bring it up to modern day standards. This approach permits the two new windfarms to connect 66MW to the network and has significantly reduced the environmental impact of manufacturing and installing a new tower line.

To accommodate the extension of Dunlaw windfarm, a new 132/33kV outdoor Transmission substation at Dunlaw Extension was constructed, along with enabling works at Smeaton and Galashiels substations, including the installation of a new 275/132kV transformer.

The 36MW potential generation from the new 12 turbine Toddleburn windfarm, was connected to the grid via 6km of 33kV Cable laid over very difficult terrain.

We’re delighted that this challenging programme of works will have lasting benefit for customers, communities and the environment for many years to come.
