SP Energy Networks own and operate the electricity transmission and distribution network in the south of Scotland and the distribution network in Cheshire, Merseyside and North Wales.
As the network operator we maintain and repair the electrical equipment and network assets that transport electricity to around 3.3 million homes and business.
We are responsible for:
- Safety, maintenance and development of our electricity network
- Restoration of electricity supply should an interruption occur
- Provision of new connections to our network
- Operation of the telephone service with relation to network enquiries and faults
To replace our entire network today would cost more than £10bn.

We operate in a regulated environment where our regulator Ofgem sets targets covering a 5 year period. Our assets and transmission and distribution licenses are owned by three wholly owned subsiduaries; SP Transmission Ltd, SP Distribution Ltd and SP Manweb plc. These act as an integrated business unit, with the aim of outperforming our regulatory targets and implementing our investment strategy to expand the network.
SP Energy Networks also includes Core Utility Solutions Ltd which was set up to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the requirement for competitive provision of connections to distribution networks.
