Support in a power cut

At SP Energy Networks, we’re here to support you when you need it most. If you're affected by a power cut or extreme weather, here are some of the ways we can help:

Need urgent help? Call 105

If you're without power, call 105 for assistance. Our advisors can help arrange:

  • Hot food deliveries
  • Hotel accommodation for you and your household

We’ll assess your needs and do our best to support you quickly and safely.

Temporary power with generators

In some cases, we may be able to provide a generator to restore power to your home.

Please note:

  • Generators are not guaranteed
  • During large-scale outages, we prioritise customers with medical needs

Call 105 to speak with an advisor.

Hotel & meal reimbursement

If you’ve arranged your own accommodation, you can claim back:

  • Up to £200 per room, per night
  • Plus £45 per person, per day for meals

To process your claim, we’ll need an itemised PDF receipt from the accommodation provider. Unfortunately, we can’t accept claims without this.

To make a claim when your power is restored, call the number for your area:

Central & Southern Scotland
0800 092 9290

Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales & North Shropshire
0800 001 5400

What to do with your fridge and freezer during a power cut

  • Keep the doors closed to maintain a cool temperature
  • Check your appliance’s manual for how long food stays safe without power

We’re unable to reimburse for spoiled food, but your home insurance may cover this.

Food expense compensation for power cuts over 12 hours

If your power is off for more than 12 hours, you can claim:

  • £10 per person, per meal, per day
  • For up to 4 people per household

That’s up to £120 per day to help cover the cost of hot food. No receipts required.

To make a claim when your power is restored, call the number for your area:

Central & Southern Scotland
0800 092 9290

Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales & North Shropshire
0800 001 5400

Storm compensation

Compensation for severe weather events is set by our regulator, Ofgem. Once the event impact is assessed and compensation levels are confirmed, we’ll proactively contact all affected customers.

Cyber security and phishing awareness

During power cuts or extreme weather events, scammers may take advantage of the situation. They know people are more likely to respond quickly to messages. This creates the perfect opportunity for phishing attacks, fraudulent emails or texts that appear to come from trusted sources but are designed to steal your personal information.

What is a phishing email or message?

A phishing message might:

  • Pretend to be from SP Energy Networks.
  • Ask you to click a link to “claim compensation” or “verify your account”.
  • Use urgent or emotional language like “act now” or “your account will be suspended”.

These messages often look convincing, but clicking on them can lead to identity theft, financial loss, or malware on your device.

How to protect yourself:

  • Pause before you click. Take a moment to think before opening links or downloading attachments.
  • Check the sender’s email address. Does it look legitimate? Is it spelled correctly?
  • Look for red flags. Poor grammar, urgent demands, or unfamiliar links are all warning signs.
  • Don’t share personal information. Never give out passwords, bank details, or personal data via email or text.
  • Verify with us directly. If you’re unsure whether a message is really from SP Energy Networks, call us using the numbers below. We’ll be happy to confirm.
