£2 Million Boost for Newtown Electricity Network

07/10/2015

SP Energy Networks has started work on a major project to modernise the main electricity substation in Newtown, which plays a key role in supplying power to over 40,000 homes and businesses in the east of Wales.

Over £2m will be invested replacing existing equipment within the current substation, with new modern infrastructure that will boost the security of electricity supplies. The project will be the most significant upgrade since the substation was initially constructed in 1960.

The main contractor is Iberdrola Engineering and Construction (IEC), and the project is due to run until May 2016. As well as replacing the main grid transformer unit, the existing concrete structures within the substation will also be completely revamped.

Mark Sobczak, Head of 132kV Programmes SP Energy Networks, said: “This project will not only boost electricity supplies in and around Newtown, it will also reinforce supplies across the east of Wales, as this substation is a key part of the wider regional high voltage network. This investment follows on from similar major upgrades in Welshpool and Oswestry, and is part of programme to deliver some of the biggest upgrades to the network in more than half a  century.

“It’s our job to keep the power flowing and the lights on, and upgrade projects like this are a big part of ensuring that happens. We will continue to work closely with Powys County Council and local stakeholders during the project, and our engineers will ensure that there are no interruptions to power supplies while the work is being carried out.”

On 31st July 2024 we published our 23/ 24 Annual Vulnerability Report covering performance for Year 1 of RIIO- ED2.

‘‘The year 2023/24 has been foundational for our ED2 programme. We worked hard to build on the solid foundation established in ED1 to evolve our partnerships, tools, and processes that will allow us to achieve our expanded ED2 ambition. At the same time, we have continued to focus on customers’ pressing needs, from delivering excellent support during emergencies to offering a range of extra help aimed at improving their welfare.’
