A Glasgow substation that has served the community since the 1900’s has undergone a £4.5m transformation thanks to SP Energy Networks.
Nestled in the in the heart of Glasgow’s West End, the Partick Meadow 132/33kV substation has been a key part of the city’s electricity network infrastructure for almost 100 years.
Now, with demand set to double by 2050, the substation has been modernised to meet the increasing electricity needs of the community.
As part of a £4.5m restoration programme, the substation saw ageing infrastructure replaced, creating a more streamlined and efficient site.

A major milestone within the project was the demolition of the old control building creating additional space for transformer installations – future-proofing the site should further capacity on the network be needed to serve the area.
Alfonso Blanco Suarez, Project Manager from SP Energy Networks said: “Partick substation has supported the local community for nearly a century, but it was time to overhaul the site and get it fit for the future.
“Our £4.5m investment has helped ensure the substation can continue to support customers well into the future as more people move towards low carbon technologies like electric vehicles and heat pumps.
“We have worked closely with local residents, businesses and the community as we completed this investment and would like to thank them all for their patience and support as we delivered this upgraded substation.”
The successful redevelopment of Partick Meadow substation is a testament to SP Energy Network’s dedication to delivering a secure, modernised, and future-ready transmission network.
As Glasgow continues to grow and evolve, infrastructure projects like this will ensure that the city’s energy backbone remains strong, sustainable, and capable of supporting the ambitions of future generations.
