Consultation on Clydesmill substation to begin in February

21/01/2026

We are looking for feedback from local residents on our plans for the transmission network around Cambuslang.

The plans would see an extension to the existing Clydesmill substation and an upgrade of the 24.6km overhead line route between Clydesmill and Denny North substation from 275kV (275,000 volts) to 400kV.

The proposals will help increase the capacity on the transmission network in the area, allowing more clean, green electricity to travel up and down the country, helping to meet the government's clean energy targets and strengthen energy security.

Last February, we held a public consultation on our initial proposals for the extension and upgrade where feedback on the plans was given.

We are now looking for further feedback on the updated proposals between Monday 9 February and Friday 27 February.

Two public exhibitions will be taking place during this period where members of the project team will be available to talk to more about the plans. Feedback can also be delivered online, by phone or via Freepost.

The exhibitions will be taking place on:

  • Wednesday 11 February, 10am-2pm: Halfway Hall, 26 Graham Avenue, Cambuslang, Glasgow G72 7RB
  • Friday 13 February, 2pm-7pm: Cambuslang Institute, 37 Greenlees Road, Cambuslang, Glasgow G72 8JE

Gaurav Sachan, Lead Project Manager at SP Energy Networks, said: "Electricity demand is set to double by 2050 and our plans to extend Clydesmill substation and upgrade the overhead line are vital to meeting that future demand.

"It's important to us to talk to and understand any concerns of the local community whenever we plan out a project and we would encourage anyone interested in finding out more to speak to us about these updated proposals. For those that can't make the drop in events, please know you can contact us by phone, email or letter to respond to the consultation and find out more."

Following this round of consultation, a finalised design for the substation layout, including locations for buildings, equipment, internal access routes, landscaping and drainage will be proposed.

Further events will be held in mid-March to present these detailed plans ahead of a planning application being submitted to South Lanarkshire Council.
