SP Energy Networks representative- Jennifer Davies, Workforce Renewal Manager

How does SP Energy Networks’ benefit from working with Forth Valley College on the apprenticeship programme?

Jennifer states “Forth Valley College are one of our valued academic partners who support us to deliver our Craft Apprentice, Adult Craft and Power Engineering roles. These roles are critical to delivering the UK’s Net Zero ambitions as we work towards a fully electric future. They deliver the HNC to power engineering apprentices from Scotland, England and Wales. The college are very attuned to what we require for our apprentices and the longstanding partnership we have with them allows us to shape the content dependant on the needs of the business.”

How does the apprenticeship programme with Forth Valley College balance academic learning through the college, and developing practical skills on site?

“The course very much blends academic and technical skills tuition with work-based learning and within the first year, our apprentices are out in their local district being mentored by our experienced staff, ensuring they gain the hands-on, practical skills required to be successful in their chosen field. They build up a portfolio of competence throughout this journey which is assessed internally and externally.  We review the apprentices progress quarterly in conjunction with Forth Valley College to ensure they are all making the expected progress in all elements of the apprenticeship.”

How does the apprenticeship programme inspire the next generation of talent?

“Our apprenticeship and training programmes are a fantastic opportunity to combine earning and learning in the rapidly evolving energy sector. Apprentices work towards a nationally recognised qualification, receive a competitive salary, and gain valuable skills and experience on the field. While our apprenticeship programmes continue to support the core craft trades of jointing, overhead lines and fitting, they also now cover areas such as logistics, power Engineering and project management, giving more diverse opportunities to the new generation of our workforce. We also offer many pre-employment programmes aimed at introducing a future workforce to SP Energy Networks and providing alternative pathways. For example, our pre-apprenticeship programme is aimed at students who don’t qualify for a modern apprenticeship, providing an alternative entry into the modern apprenticeship programme.”

What advice would you give to someone looking to undertake an apprenticeship with SP Energy Networks?

“I can’t imagine a more exciting time to join the energy sector. Together, we’re building a sustainable future and the career opportunities are endless. I’d encourage anyone interested in our apprenticeship offerings to learn about our business and don’t hesitate to apply during our application window.”

Hearing from our excellent representatives, we understand the profound impact this fantastic partnership has had on the energy industry, shaping its future. We are all proud to be part of this transformative journey.
