SP Energy Networks shares plans for network upgrades in South Lanarkshire

12/10/2026

SP Energy Networks is seeking feedback on plans for two projects to upgrade the electricity transmission network in South Lanarkshire.

The proposals – part of SP Energy Network’s multi-billion-pound plans to upgrade the grid – will unlock regional economic growth, support increased electricity demand and ensure a secure and reliable power supply for future generations.

The Clydesmill to Strathaven Upgrade Project will upgrade the existing power lines between Clydesmill substation in Cambuslang and Strathaven substation, west of Hamilton, with a new overhead line tower proposed at each substation as well as a new underground cable and an extension to Strathaven substation.

A separate project, which has already been subject to public consultation, proposes the extension of Clydesmill substation and upgrading the existing overhead line to Denny North substation.

Garry Hemmings, Project Manager for SP Energy Networks said: “We’re investing billions in our grid to ensure our customers and communities benefit from a network that meets their needs as demand for electricity increases and more people make the switch to the likes of electric vehicles, heat pumps and solar panels. So, it’s vital that those customers and communities have the opportunity to let us know what they think – that's exactly what this consultation is designed to do.

“For the Clydesmill substation project, we will be sharing the final project design, taking account of all the feedback received to date, while we’ll be revealing our plans for the Clydesmill to Strathaven substation upgrade for the first time.”

To find out more about the projects, SP Energy Networks is hosting two community drop-in events at the start of next month and everyone is invited to attend:

  • Monday 2 November 2026, 3pm-7pm, Halfway Community Hub, 211 Hamilton Road, Cambuslang, G72 7PJ (Clydesmill Substation Extension application presentation / Clydesmill to Strathaven Upgrade Project)
  • Tuesday 3 November 2026, 3pm-7pm, Hillhouse & Earnock Community Centre, 121 Hillhouse Rd, Hamilton, ML3 9TX (Clydesmill to Strathaven Upgrade Project)

Gary added: “Consultation is a crucial part of developing our plans and we encourage residents to come along, meet the team, hear more about the plans and ask questions about the projects."

If people cannot make it along to the community drop-ins, they can find out more information via the project web pages, or get in touch with the project teams by email, phone or post:
