Powering the next generation

01/09/2025

Over 100 school pupils from across central Scotland recently came together at Glasgow City Chambers to learn more about career opportunities in the green energy sector.

The event hosted in partnership with Energy Development Trust, gave S4 - S6 students from 12 high schools an insight into where the energy they consume comes from, how the electricity grid operates and the principles of community energy - as well as guidance on potential employment routes.

Attendees had the chance to earn an Industrial Cadets Challenger Award by taking part in a series of interactive challenges - from planning their own community energy project powered by solar, wind or hydro, to creating a 3D model of their designs.

The workshops supported topics covered by the Skills for Work: Energy National 5 qualification, allowing students to apply their academic learning to real world situations.

Sessions were delivered by SP Energy Networks’ Community Energy team - a dedicated department tasked with supporting the community energy ambitions of local groups within network areas.

The team of experts help grassroots organisations to find solutions to local energy issues and environmental concerns.

Liam Cantwell, Community Energy Manager - SP Distribution, said: “Events like this are such a vital way of showing young people just how important community energy is for our future. By getting them involved in practical activities with real world impact, we hope to spark their interest in the energy industry and show them how they can be part of the solution.

“These students are our future innovators, and it’s so important that we support their ambitions and help them see the impact they could have in their own local community.”
