We have partnered with a local environmental charity for the first time to launch a major new biodiversity initiative in the Scottish Borders, the ‘Pilmuir Riparian Woodland and Hedgerow Creation Project’.

The project will focus on improving water quality and biodiversity in the River Teviot catchment, helping to stabilise riverbanks, reduce soil erosion, buffer agricultural activity and provide vital habitat corridors for birds, pollinators and other small mammals. Once established, the new habitats will play a key role in linking existing semi-natural areas, enhancing landscape connectivity and resilience.

Developed by Tweed Forum and Scottish Borders Council, the Pilmuir Riparian Woodland and Hedgerow Creation Project has been supported by SP Energy Networks as part of the company’s commitment to achieve no net loss of biodiversity across its transmission network in central and southern Scotland by 2028.

Part of the work towards this ambitious target includes support for local nature habitat restoration and enhancement projects, delivering measurable gains for wildlife and local communities.

Hamish Roberston, Tweed Forum Senior Project Officer said; “By working with SP Energy Networks to create these new riparian woodlands and hedgerows, we’ll be connecting important habitat networks to enhance biodiversity, improving water quality and providing multiple additional environmental benefits across the landscape. This project is a practical, lasting example of how targeted investment can help restore nature around us.”

The project, which has been developed in consultation with Scottish Borders Council, Hawick Common Good and local landowners, began preparation works in autumn 2025. Planting of the hedgerows and woodlands is scheduled to run from January 2026 through to the spring, followed by a multi-year period of establishment including vegetation control to ensure long-term success.

Gill Renwick, Sustainability Manager for SP Energy Networks said; “We are committed to delivering real, measurable biodiversity benefits in the areas where we operate. Pilmuir Farm is a great example of how collaboration with local partners can deliver habitat creation, enhance landscape connectivity and provide wider benefits for communities.”

This initiative forms part of SP Energy Networks’ Action Plan for Nature, which commits to halting and reversing biodiversity loss through targeted habitat creation and restoration. Through initiatives like this, SP Energy Networks is ensuring that network investment not only powers homes and businesses but also supports Scotland’s natural environment and local communities.
