We recently teamed up with Glasgow Warriors and SmartSTEM for SP Energy Network’s first Additional Support Needs (ASN) school event. The aim of the event was to educate and inspire 36 pupils from four schools in Glasgow and surrounding local area, making STEM and rugby more accessible, with tailored learning materials and quiet areas.

The day was packed with fun activities for pupils and teachers, featuring power safety demonstrations, rugby introductions from Glasgow Warriors, and creative workshops, ensuring everyone had a great time and learned something new.
It was fantastic to see pupils enjoying the electrical safety workshop with its fun, interactive experiment and ‘spot the dangers’ backdrop. They also participated in playing rugby, discovering new interests and talents – some even gave the players a run for their money!
Rhiannon Lewis from Howford Primary School said: “It’s getting them active… Getting them out and involved in community activities is amazing.”
For the adults, the event highlighted inclusivity and the importance of supporting such initiatives. Everyone in attendance received information about our free Priority Services Register (PSR) for those who may need more support during a power cut, and the Breaking Barriers programme, a program that helps young people with learning disabilities gain work experience and an accredited qualification in partnership with Scottish Power, the University of Strathclyde, and ENABLE Scotland.

Brian Kairns from Drummore Primary noted, “…it’s a sense of being able to do activities that are not necessarily in the school. And being able to engage and share experiences with other schools.”
Claire Drivers, Project Office Co-ordinator from SP Energy Networks said: “It was a privilege to lead SP Energy Networks’ first-ever STEM Day tailored for Additional Support Needs (ASN) schools.
Being able to create an event that was tailored for ASN students was important for me, not only as a parent of a child with ASN, but to show that SP Energy Networks values inclusion and raising awareness through our STEM programme. It shows that we can lead the way with events like this and I'm proud of everyone that was involved.
I was truly overwhelmed by the engagement and participation of the pupils. Their desire to learn about electrical safety and energy was infectious, as was their participation in introduction to rugby. The teachers' feedback exceeded my expectations, and they are keen to be involved in more events in future, not only with STEM awareness but also to work collaboratively to educate their pupils on energy safety through our Powerwise programme.”
We’re proud to be working in partnership with Glasgow Warriors to support all the communities we serve including the ASN community, and this event is just the beginning of our ongoing commitment.
