SP Energy Networks invests £5million to keep South Lanarkshire connected

19/03/2018

We are about to begin a two-year £5million project to improve electricity connectivity for over 7,000 homes and local businesses in Strathaven.

The two-year project, which begins this month, will see the installation of new equipment and replacement of old cables, in order to equip the village and surrounding area for upcoming expansion.

The upgrade will allow us, the owner and maintainer of power lines in the area, to provide a more reliable network to customers and reduce the frequency of power cuts. The work will also make the network more resilient to severe weather and help pave the way for the application of low-carbon technology in the coming years.

The improvements will include the construction of a new substation in Strathaven Village and the installation of 9.5km of underground cables, running from Hamilton Road Industrial Estate, through Strathaven and up to Muttonhole Road. The work will involve 1.2km of excavations through the industrial estate, in order to connect the new substation to the old site at The Ward.

While our engineers work hard to keep inconvenience to a minimum, traffic flow will experience some disruption on the road between Hamilton and Strathaven, as the work site progresses through the area, in order to allow underground works to take place.

There will be times over the next two years when customers may see interruptions to their electrical supplies, but where this is necessary, a member of the SP Energy Networks’ team will visit customers and send them a letter in the post to confirm details. Interruptions to supplies would be for no longer than one day duration and would normally be during working day hours.

Guy Jefferson, Customer Service Director at SP Energy Networks, said: “Here at SP Energy Networks, we are committed to maintaining and improving the electricity network for all of our customers, whether they live in the city centre or rural villages. The improvements being made in Strathaven and the surrounding area will make power cuts less likely in the future and safeguard the network for years to come.”
