SPEN Volunteers Build New Literacy Shed for Criftins School

10/10/2017

A group of volunteers, led by SP Energy Networks, worked tirelessly on Friday 6th October to construct a new ‘Literacy Shed’ at Criftins Primary School in Dudleston Heath. The shed will provide both the current and future school children with a unique space in their playground to gather and read stories.

Although the 12-strong gang of volunteers erected the shed in under 8 hours, the project has been in planning for several weeks. The bespoke structure was designed from scratch by engineers at Fairhurst in Sheffield, with AE Yates from Bolton providing the raw materials as well as manufacturing the wooden frame. Neary from Manchester provided the paint and carried out the painting work, along with the ‘Library’ lettering and School’s emblem for the finished product.  OTL from Oswestry provided battery powered lighting along with outdoor furnishings. Finally, SP Energy Networks provided further labour on the day, as well as speaking to the pupils about the nature of the project throughout its construction.

Mark Sobczak, 132kV General Manager at SP Energy Networks, said: “We had a great day at Criftins, and a huge team effort has seen the fantastic new literacy shed constructed in record time. We all enjoyed speaking to the children and explaining the project. We have worked with the school to deliver a project aimed at encouraging future readers, whilst hopefully the structure itself will encourage one or two to think about a career in engineering. A huge thanks to all of those who gave up their time to take part.”

Mandy Jones, Executive Head Teacher at Criftins Primary School, said: “We are just blown away by the generosity shown today towards our school. This novel idea will transform our playtimes! Pupils now have a magical place to read and relax and inspire them as lifelong readers. Thanks to everyone who helped - this will help our children now and in the future.”
