SP Energy Networks have recently commenced connecting Chirmorie and Stranoch Windfarms into the Transmission Network.
Situated between Glenluce in the north of Dumfries and Galloway and Barrhill in South Ayrshire, the shared connection solution will connect the wind farms into Markhill Substation to the north of Barrhill in Ayrshire.

The shared connection involves a total of 18 km 132 kV double wood pole line comprising of 6 km between Stranoch and Chirmorie collector substations and thereafter routing back to Markhill Substation for 12 km.
Due to the remote and challenging location a helicopter will be utilised at times to transport materials to locations along the route.
When the connection is completed in Q3 2026- the combined generation of the two windfarms will deliver up to 178 MWs of energy adding significantly to the nations clean electricity supply.
Extensive community engagement has taken place around the various SP Energy Projects and working closely with local communities has been an important part of the project.
