Public consultation on Denny to Wishaw Network Upgrade project
SP Energy Networks (SPEN) is asking local people for their views on plans to reinforce the electricity transmission network between Denny and Wishaw.
The proposals include new equipment at the existing substations at Denny North, Bonnybridge, Cumbernauld, Easterhouse and Wishaw; increasing the voltage of three existing overhead lines from 275kV (275,000 volts) to 400kV; and building a new overhead transmission line between Bonnybridge and a point near Glenmavis, where it will join an existing overhead line.
SP Energy Networks consulted local people about the project from January to April 2025. We are now asking local people and stakeholders for their feedback on our detailed plans.
Public consultation runs from Monday 27 October to Friday 21 November. Local people can find out more about the proposals at the project website www.spenergynetworks.co.uk/pages/denny_wishaw.aspx or by coming to one of our drop-in events:

The Denny to Wishaw Network Upgrade is needed because the high-voltage transmission network in central Scotland will soon be at full capacity – unable to accommodate all the clean, green renewable energy we will all need in future.
It will link up existing transmission lines and allow an additional 1,000MW (megawatts) of green energy to flow through the electricity transmission network, helping Scotland and the UK meet Net Zero climate change targets.
The consultation is being advertised in local newspapers, and a leaflet is being sent to homes and businesses in the local area.
Feedback received during this public consultation will help SP Energy Networks develop its plans in the best way, before submitting consent applications next year.
Full details including project documents, an interactive map and online feedback form will be available at the project website from Monday 27 October 2025.
