SP Energy Networks is undertaking crucial work to upgrade our electricity infrastructure in the area of Grassmarket, Edinburgh in order to meet ever-growing electricity demand and improve network resilience.
Information about improvements to the electricity network
We have identified a need for immediate network reinforcement within Edinburgh’s Grassmarket area in order to better support local business and residents.
We are installing additional underground cables that will supply electricity to homes and businesses in the community to improve network resilience and reliability with the aim of reducing electrical faults experienced in recent years due to increased demand.
Throughout the planning this project, we have worked closely with the local authority to minimise disruption to the surrounding community where possible, however we do accept that the nature of works will cause some disturbance and inconvenience along the Grassmarket.
The initial phase of this work will take place from January 2026 – End March 2026 with further works on Kings Stables Road & West Port forecast to begin following the first phase of upgrade works.
To deliver these network upgrades we are working with our trusted contractor PMK, who will be onsite managing and completing the necessary improvements.

What to expect
As part of the initial cable overlay works, we need to transfer services from the existing cable to the new cable.
This process will require a short power outage of approximately one hour for individual properties.
Please be assured that our team will contact impacted residents and local businesses directly to agree on a time that works best, helping to keep any disruption to a minimum.
We are also committed to reducing traffic management measures and restrictions in your area wherever possible.
Keeping you up to date
