Future-proofing our network in Lymm

We are delivering a major upgrade to modernise the electricity network in Lymm, so we can meet increasing demands for electricity in a cleaner and greener future.

We are replacing a 13km cable connection in Lymm to future-proof the local network and ensure a safe, reliable and resilient electricity supply for the region.

The project is being delivered in stages, with work starting at two separate locations in Lymm on Monday 5 January 2025. The work involves digging sections of road and footpaths to replace old cables, then connecting the new cables to various points on our local supply network.

The work is scheduled for completion in August 2026, by which time the new, modern cable connection will be in place and supporting a reliable supply of electricity that’s fit for the future.

We’re working with Warrington-based partner Opus Utility Solutions to deliver the work, which will start with installing a section of the cable on Cherry Lane and the Lymm Footpath.

Diversion routes and signage will be in place to make people aware, and we will complete the work as safely and quickly as possible to minimise disruption.

We’ll ensure access to properties and businesses is always maintained, and do not expect electricity supplies to be interrupted as a result of this work.

Our plans have been agreed with Warrington Borough Council and are designed to minimise disruption to road users.

Further updates on our work in the area, including diversion routes, are available to view online at https://one.network

We are keeping the local community regularly informed as our work progresses, with a series of letters, emails, drop-in sessions and webinars. A link to our latest project webinar is provided here.

We know that any disruption to your daily routine can feel bigger than it looks on paper, and we genuinely appreciate your continued patience as this essential work progresses. Our team is working hard to keep the project moving while minimising inconvenience and keeping everyone in the community safe.

Recent Schedule Updates

Following recent updates to the project schedule we have received questions and concerns around overlapping dates in key locations around Lymm, which on paper look like it will cause disruption.

We understand how important it is to be able to travel smoothly through your town, that is why all our schedules have been planned with this at the heart of every decision.

Overlapping dates refer to our permit applications which are required to start work on different sections of this project. Specifically related to our permits for Rushgreen Road Phase 1 and 2, and Sandy Lane – these dates overlap to allow for smooth progression of works, from one phase to the next, without idling time for our teams.

We do not plan on carrying out work on these roads at the same time due to the disruption and commuting difficulties this would cause.

As has been the case with the project to date, our construction partner OPUS and their teams on the ground will work with residents to ensure access to residential property at all times, despite full road closures being in place.

Rushgreen Road

Work will begin on Rushgreen Road (West) on Tuesday 21st April, with two teams completing this section of work under road closure. Following reinstatement of the road, our teams will separate so that work can continue efficiently on the East end of Rushgreen Road under a road closure.  The middle section of Rushgreen Road will then be completed, under temporary traffic lights, following its completion.

We’ve designed this phased approach with one priority in mind: minimising the impact on your daily routine. By completing the work in stages, we reduce the amount of time in any one area and help keep your journeys predictable.

Most importantly:

  • Emergency vehicles will always have full access
  • Residents will still be able to reach their driveways
  • Our on‑site teams will work with you directly if you need access at any point

A decision has been taken to postpone work on Sandy Lane, allowing us to focus our attention on Rushgreen Road while minimising disruption for residents and road users where possible.

Bus Routes and Diversions

We know public transport is a key service for many and understand that the ongoing work on Rushgreen Road is going to impact the current service offering. That is why we want to be fully transparent on the upcoming impact on the 5A and 5B routes.

For the duration of the works on Rushgreen Road there will be no 5A or 5B buses going through Lymm and down Rushgreen Road. The 5A and 5B will instead operate directly via the A56 between Lymm and Sale. The bus operator has further information on their website here.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) operates the 280 bus route into Lymm, though they have not provided any information regarding rerouting due to the roadworks. Their website shows live updates and any disruption to bus routes. This is available here.

We will continue to monitor updates from TfGM and maintain accurate diversion information on this page.

Lymm View Site Visit

Your feedback has been instrumental. Based on what we heard from residents, a joint site visit with Warrington Borough Council has taken place to review the reinstatement quality along the Lymm View footpath.

Following agreement with Warrington Borough Council, our teams will return to the Lymm View footpath to reroll the compound to ensure a smooth and accessible finish. Additional grass seed will also be sown on the surrounding patches of ground used during the initial works to make sure the grass returns to its original condition.

All work will be completed in due course when weather allows prior to the end of this project.

Higher Lane Disruption

We are aware of additional disruption caused on Higher Lane due to impromptu temporary lights being set up earlier this week (w/c 20th April). Combined with the works being completed on Rushgreen Road we understand that this created difficulties for those travelling through this area of Lymm.

The work being carried out on Higher Lane was not part of the Lymm Network Reinforcement Project, currently being carried out by SP Energy Networks, and was emergency work carried out by a separate utilities provider.

The traffic management system on Higher Lane has since been removed following the completion of the emergency works, and we encourage people to return to using this road as normal to reduce traffic flow going through the open section of Rushgreen Road.

Stay Informed

All ongoing work has been designed to keep momentum high and disruption low, that is why we are continuously working with our contractor OPUS and Warrington Borough Council to complete work safely and efficiently.

The project timeline below is indicative and may shift as technical, statutory, and environmental factors come into play because real-world engineering rarely behaves as neatly as a spreadsheet.

We’ll keep this page refreshed regularly, so the most up-to-date information is always in one place. If you’re ever wondering what’s happening next, this remains the simplest and most reliable source.
