To support the future electrification of the railway in Fife, at the request of Network Rail we are delivering a new feeder station (Thornton North) at Station Road , Glenrothes which will be powered by a connection from Glenrothes Substation.
The project will include the installation of approximately 10.5km of 25kV underground cable to create the connection between Glenrothes substation and new Thornton North feeder station.
Construction Route and method
The underground cable route highlighted green on the map below includes the following roads – Murray Place, Leslie High Street, Glenwood Road, Golf Course Road, B921 Kinglassie Road, B9130 Blackwood Road, Station Road.

The first stage of work involves trenching and installation of underground ducting along the route. The second stage of the project will be ‘cable pulling’ and jointing which will take place in and around the joint bays located at certain points along the cable route.
A rolling sequence of Traffic management will be in place throughout to support the safety of the public along with the project team carrying out the activities.

Timescales
Work will begin in August 2025 and will be ongoing until May 2026 ( subject to weather/delays ). These timescales include our specialist contractors initially trenching and installing the ducts along the route. On completion of phase one the cables will be pulled through the ducts and joined at predetermined cable joint points (joint bays). Testing the cables will then follow on.
In agreement with the local council – four teams will be operating on four different sectors of the route which will reduce overall timescales for completing the project.
