Kaimes Substation 275 kV Switchgear Replacement

Kaimes Substation is located to the south of Edinburgh and is a major node on the east west interconnected transmission network which supports distribution of energy to central Edinburgh.

The project involves the replacement of three 275 kV circuit breakers which were originally installed in the early sixties and features in our modernisation programme as part of our agreement with Ofgem under the RIIOT1 period.

The program of work commenced in August 2020 and when complete, will ensure the substation continues to play its crucial role in the transmission network well into the future.

All the work is scheduled to take place within the confines of the existing substation.  Activity in a live substation environment is a challenging task and as with any significant construction project, there will be different phases to the project which is due to be completed in fourth quarter of 2021. The investment cost of the project is in excess of £6 million.

Covid 19 – SP Energy Networks have assessed all our projects and activity and have introduced a number of measures at site taking this matter into account.

SPENs modernisation programme ensures the transmission network in central and southern Scotland plays its key part as the nation moves to clean energy and a more sustainable environment.
