Our Net Zero Transition Plan

The Net Zero Transition Plan brings together our progress so far in reaching our Net Zero aspiration and the steps we’ll take to achieve it.

This is a pivotal step as it signals our intent not just to support the UK’s Net Zero transition, but to lead it.

Our Net Zero Transition Plan was created with the support of Planet Mark and highlights our journey to Net Zero and key milestones we’ve achieved including:

  • Using 100% UK-based renewable energy in most of our buildings and substations resulting in an estimated carbon savings of 67,992 tCO2 since the start of RIIO-T2
  • Our Business Travel Policy has reduced air travel to just 6% of all journeys
  • As part of our RIIO-ED2 commitments, we aim to reduce SF6 leakage rates by 10% compared to RIIO-ED1 levels. We’re actively collaborating with electrical equipment suppliers to deploy SF6-free technologies across all voltage levels, with a target to cease the installation of new SF6 assets from 2028—where cost effective and technically viable alternatives exist.
  • We provide an employee salary sacrifice scheme for public transport, cycle to work and electric vehicle lease schemes, to encourage people away from their petrol and diesel cars.

While we’ve made progress, our Net Zero strategy is ambitious. By setting bold targets, we aim to push ourselves to achieve greater emissions reductions than we might with a less ambitious goal.

We anticipate that our emissions reductions will not follow a straight, consistent path. While some parts of our carbon footprint may decarbonise in line with the 2035 Net Zero pathway, some may decarbonise faster and others may lag. The focus is on the overall outcome.

By achieving Net Zero across our own operations, we’re showing what’s possible and setting the standard for others to follow.
