SP Energy Networks is investing £1.5 million to strengthen the local electricity network, helping to ensure it can continue to support homes, businesses and essential community services for years to come.
Much of the existing network was installed in the 1960s and, as electricity demand continues to grow, it is forecast to reach capacity by 2028 without further investment.
To address this, SP Energy Networks will install new underground cables to increase network capacity, improve reliability and reduce the risk of future power disruptions. The investment will help ensure the network is ready to support increasing demand as more homes and businesses rely on electricity for heating, transport and everyday activities.
Planned work and road closure
Work is expected to begin in October 2026 and will involve installing cable ducts and new electricity cables along sections of the local road network.
King Edward Street will need to close temporarily for up to three weeks in November so this section can be completed safely. A signed diversion route will be in place during the closure, with further details provided before the work begins.
Work on other roads in Barmouth will take place before and after the closure, mainly using temporary traffic lights and other local traffic management arrangements.
We recognise the closure will cause considerable inconvenience, particularly for residents, businesses and people travelling through Barmouth. We are working closely with Cyngor Gwynedd to complete this section safely and as quickly as possible.
Listening to the community
During our early engagement, local residents and businesses emphasised the importance of avoiding major disruption during Barmouth’s busiest visitor season.
We listened to this feedback and scheduled the programme to begin in the autumn, outside the main summer season. Although some disruption will be unavoidable, carrying out the most significant work at this time should help reduce its effect on local businesses, tourism and the wider community.
Community information events
Before work begins, we wish to engage with the community further. As such we are hosting three community information events that will provide an opportunity for residents and businesses to learn more about the planned works, ask any questions and share their insights, to help the team carry out the work in the best possible way.
All events are being held at Barmouth Elim Church, Elephant Works, Park Road, Barmouth, Gwynedd, LL42 1PH on the following dates and times.
- Monday 28 Sept: 1-3pm
- Wednesday 30 Sept: 6-8pm
- Monday 5 Oct: 6-8pm
A short presentation will be given at the start of each event, but attendees are welcome to drop in at any time during the advertised opening hours.
What will the work involve?
The project will be completed in three main stages:
Stage 1: Duct Installation
The main construction phase, involving excavation works to install underground ducts (protective pipes) for the new cables to run through. This stage typically involves the highest levels of construction activity, traffic management and noise.
Stage 2: Cable Installation
Once the ducts are in place, the new cables are pulled through and connected at specialist access points known as joint bays. Works are usually more localised during this stage, with less intrusive traffic and pedestrian management.
Stage 3: Reinstatement
Roads and footpaths affected by the work will be repaired and returned to their previous condition in accordance with highway requirements. This is usually done during stages one and two.
Our teams may need to return to some locations as the project moves through these stages. This is a normal part of installing, connecting and testing new electricity infrastructure
Managing disruption
We are developing the programme with Cyngor Gwynedd and will continue working with local residents, businesses and organisations to minimise disruption wherever possible.
During the work:
- traffic management and diversion routes will be clearly signposted;
- advance notice will be provided before significant changes are introduced;
- access for residents and businesses will be maintained;
- pedestrian access will be maintained wherever it is safe to do so;
- emergency services will be kept informed of the programme; and
- no interruption to local electricity supplies is expected as a result of the work.
We will regularly review the traffic management arrangements and respond to any issues raised as the work progresses.
