Walter and Skye's Stormy Night by Emily MacKenzie and SP Energy Networks
Page 1
One windy Wednesday, Walter was worrying about the weather.
It all began that morning when he noticed the leaves dancing and swirling around his ankles.
Page 2
At nursery, he had fun playing windy games with his friends.
When his hat blew right off his head, he was happy that Cal caught it for him.
Page 3
It was even more blustery by home time and Mum’s umbrella had a life of its own.
‘I think my scarf likes the wind!’ laughed his sister, Skye.
But Walter wasn’t sure that he liked it anymore.
Page 4
He was glad when they finally got back to their cosy house.
‘Hi kids!’ called Dad as they all piled in.
‘Wow! It’s getting wild out there, isn’t it? Uncle Eddie thinks we might have a power cut later.’
Page 5
‘Don’t worry,’ said Mum, noticing Walter and Skye’s faces.
‘Sometimes, when the weather gets really stormy, the power might stop for a little while. But we can get our Storm Kit ready…
and because you’re both little, there’s a special phone number we can ring for help too.’
Page 6
That made Walter and Skye feel better, and in no time at all they were busy searching for all the things on Mum and Dad’s list – and some extra bits too!
Page 7
‘I think we have more batteries in the shed. I’ll be back in a minute,’ said Dad.
Page 8
‘What do we do now, Mum?’ asked Walter.
‘Well, I’m just going to ring Nancy next door to check she’s alright,’ said Mum.
Page 9
‘Thanks for phoning dear, I’m fine,’ said Nancy. ‘I’m very cosy and I have my torch, my blanket and a flask of tea ready…just in case!’
‘Well, I’ve added us all to the Priority Servies Register’ said Mum kindly. ‘And remember, Nancy, if there is a power cut you can call 105. Ok?’
Mum said goodbye to Nancy. The door opened…
Page 10
And Dad was back with the batteries.
He was just in time.
The lights flickered and everything went…DARK!
Page 11
‘Eek! It’s a power cut!’ said Walter.
‘Don’t worry,’ said Skye bravely. ‘We know what we have to do!’
Page 12
So while the wind rattled the windows and the rain drummed on the roof, they turned on the torches and Dad called 105 to report the power cut.
‘Now that’s all sorted out,’ said Mum, ‘let’s have some FUN!’
Page 13
Mum hung up the battery-powered fairy lights from the Storm Kit, Dad turned on the radio and Skye found some crayons.
Skye and Walter thought it was all very exciting – like a cosy indoor adventure.
Page 14
As the stormy night went on, the wind howled and whistled and the trees creaked outside, but Walter and Skye were cosy and safe.
They played night trains with torchlit tunnels,
built a blanket den
and even made a midnight zoo!
Page 15
After a while, Dad called them over to the window.
‘Look, there’s Uncle Eddie fixing the power lines,’ he said proudly.
Walter and Skye were excited to watch him at work.
Page 16
Then Mum said it was time for books.
‘Everyone knows stories are more exciting by torchlight anyway!’ chuckled Dad.
Page 17
They all cuddled up on the sofa and read together.
Then just as they were getting to the best part of the story…
Page 18
The lights came back on!
‘Booooooo!’ said Walter and Skye in unison.
‘Can we turn them off again?!’ asked Skye.
Page 19
‘Power cuts aren’t so scary if you’re ready!’ added Walter happily – and everybody laughed.

A little note about power cuts
Sometimes storms or extreme weather can cause the lights to go out – that’s called a power cut.
When that happens, SP Energy Networks will work day and night to get your electricity back on as quickly as they can. Being prepared makes everything easier, especially in the cold winter months.
How you can get ready
It’s always a good idea to keep a storm kit nearby.
If the power goes out, it can be worrying for those who may need extra support. That’s why we offer our Priority Services Register, a free service to make sure you get the help you need, when you need it.
You can join our Priority Services Register if someone in your household:
- Is under 5 years old
- Is over 60 years old
- Has a special communication need
- Relies on electricity for home medical care
- Has a long term health condition, or
- Needs a little extra help
