Windyhill Substation is situated in West Dunbartonshire to the north of Glasgow and is a key hub in central and southern Scotlands transmission network infrastructure.

SP Energy Networks are making significant changes to the transmission network across central and southern Scotland as we deliver increased electricity capacity for the nation.
Work commenced at Windyhill Substation in early 2022 on a project involving the replacement of existing 275 kV switchgear which has served the network for several decades.
With an investment cost of over £50 million, the programme of work has seen the site team successfully complete construction of a new 15 bay 275 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear Building (GIS).
Activity is now underway to transfer the existing external air insulted connections to the bays within the new building. When the connection transfers are completed, the original 15 bays of air insulated 275 kV switchgear will be demolished and removed along with associated apparatus.
The transfers and different complex elements of the programme are scheduled to run through until completion in 2028. Windyhill along with many other projects are making huge inroads into achieving net zero and energy security.
