DSO in Action: Providing easy access to accurate and timely data

04/07/2025

By Kirsty Scott, Head of Network Data and Intelligence, SP Energy Networks

Every time you download a table, click through to a dashboard, or query an API, you’re not just exploring data — you’re planning projects, securing funding, making decisions, and shaping the energy system which powers where you live and work.

Over the last year, your feedback has been clear:

So that’s what we’ve done. Together.

We’ve made it easier to plan with confidence

We’ve shared ten new datasets, cleansed and automated records, and transformed the way you find and use our data. But what really matters is what that enables you to do.

And you’re sharing your views with us, helping us improve, and recognising our efforts.

“SP Energy Networks have made a concerted effort to improve the availability of their data… I’ve noticed a clear effort to make technical detail easy to digest and understand for people at all levels of expertise.”

Local Authority Stakeholder, 2025

So what’s new – and what does it mean for you?

Clean, trusted numbers

We’ve improved the validity of the Embedded Capacity Register from 41% to 85% through automation and error removal – you now have a dependable baseline to work from – and we’re not stopping there.

Visual tools that reflect real geography

We’ve launched interactive maps and dashboards which put capacity, outage history and reinforcement plans at your fingertips – generating immediate insights by street, region, or postcode.

Support and guidance to fit around you

We’ve developed “how-to” videos to support stakeholders on how to use and access our data, hosted a “Hands on with our Data” webinar, and embedded a streamlined feedback loop, enabling you to engage with our team of experts.

Regional insights, local decisions

Our datasets and feature pages enable you to zoom in on your local area – whether you’re interested in a local authority, district, or a whole licence region. This means you can target opportunities in Wrexham, track constraints in Liverpool and see demand patterns in Glasgow.

And what’s next on the roadmap?

Here’s what’s coming next in 2025 – based on what you’ve told us matters:

We don’t just want to publish data – we want to co-create tools and insights that make your work easier. Help shape what comes next and work with us to develop our 2026 Roadmap….

You can feed into our survey, use the portal’s feedback feature or contact our team directly at opendata@spenergynetworks.co.uk. Every idea helps improve the system — for you and others. The bottom line – when stakeholders have the right data, projects move faster, funding bids land stronger and communities see real outcomes.
