Audio Transcript: Technical – Does the group need technical assistance?

The text below is the transcript from the "Technical – Does the group need technical assistance?" video. An audio-described version of the video is also available.

At this stage, you've completed your feasibility study and developed your business plan. Now, it's time to get the right technical expertise in place to move your project forward.

Every community energy project will require some level of technical assistance. Whether that's designing a solar installation, planning a hydroelectric system, or constructing a small wind turbine. Technical assistance means working with the right specialists, engineers, architects, and renewable energy professionals who can help design, cost, and plan your project in detail.

For example, a hydroelect electric project will need specialist engineers to design the water flow system, turbines, and safe return to the river. A solar project requires expertise in system design, cabling, inverters, and mounting structures. A wind project will involve complex foundation design, mechanical installation, and grid connection requirements.

At this stage, your team should be commissioning suppliers and technical experts who can turn your feasibility findings into detailed build ready designs. Good project management is just as important as technical expertise, particularly when volunteers are leading delivery.

When selecting suppliers or contractors, always do your due diligence. Check their track record and experience in community scale projects. Review qualifications, accreditations, and financial stability. Ask for multiple quotes to compare cost, quality, and service. And remember that the cheapest option isn't always the right one for your project.

It's also worth reaching out to other community energy groups to learn who they worked with and what they'd recommend. Having the right partners and technical experts on board ensures your project is designed safely, efficiently, and to the right standard, setting you up for a successful build and smooth connection to the grid.

Technical assistance is about turning plans into practical action. With the right support, your community energy project is ready to move from planning to construction.
